Q: Should job descriptions be changed frequently?

A: Since job descriptions are developed in alignment with the job nature, organization structure and business processes which are relatively long-term and stable, normally they should be considered as permanent unless there are significant changes in corporate  directives which subsequently affect business processes, organization structure and job nature..

October 2010 HR Highlights

Economic Overview

The University of Hong Kong's Hong Kong Institute of Economics and Business Strategy expects the city's real gross domestic product to jump by 5.8% year-on-year in the third quarter - up from its previous estimate of 5.3%, because of a strong pickup in external demand. It also forecasts 4.8% growth in the final quarter. However, these predictions show slower growth than the 8% and 6.5% increases in the first two quarters. The institute also estimates 6.2% growth for the full year, up from the 5% it forecast early this year and slightly higher than the government's prediction of a 5% to 6% growth rate, and there was room for employers to increase staff pay by around 5%

Moreover, Hong Kong's manufacturing activity expanded for the 14th straight month in September. The purchasing managers index rose to 52.8 from 52.3 in August, and was the highest since May when it reached 53.2, according to HSBC Holdings. A reading above 50 indicates expansion. September's growth was backed by an overall increase in new orders, while those from the mainland dropped for the first time since May last year. Consumer prices in Hong Kong gained 2.6% from a year earlier, according to the data released by the Censes and Statistics Department. A survey, which collected data from 93 organisations based in Hong Kong, indicated average pay increased from 2.1% to 2.6% at different staff levels from July 2009 to June 2010, with the largest increases going to supervisory and technical staff. The projected pay growth, worked out from answers by 66 organisations, would be around 3% next year, according to the survey jointly conducted by the Hong Kong People Management Association and Hong Kong Baptist University.
